Job Description

Radiology technology procedures are performed by radiologic technicians or technoligists who utilize x-ray techniques to help diagnose and treat patients. They are sometimes also referred to as radiographers, radiologists, or x-ray technicians. They sometimes perform complex imaging procedures, like a fluoroscopy, used to take real-time video images of patients internal structures. The radiologic technologist plays a crucial role in diagnostic procedures.

Education

Radiologic technology programs and certification courses are offered by many accredited educational institutions around the country. Typical radiologic technology schools offer certificates, associates, and bachelors degree programs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the associates level degree is the most popular for currently practicing radiology technicians.

Radiology technician education can be gained by attending one of the many technology colleges or training schools around the country, or even through some online programs. In fact, in 2009, The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredited 213 certificate programs, 397 associates degree programs, and 35 bachelors degree programs. Salary

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported radiologic technologists at a median salary of approximately $53,000. The lowest 10 percent earned under $35,000 and the highest ten percent earned over $75,000 a year.

Job Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected a 17 percent job growth for radiologic technologists between 2008 and 2018. This is attributed to the aging population of baby boomers- with age comes illness and disease, which means the need for more diagnoses. This is anticipated to impact both the health care and dental industries for radiologic technologists, and can be viewed as a major opportunity for career advancement.

Advancement

Experienced radiologic technologists may advance to managerial positions within their departments. Some also pursue specializations, such as that of becoming a radiation therapist. Still others advance into sales, where they offer the latest radiology equipment to healthcare facilities and hopsitals.
