Surgeon

Surgeons are the head of a surgery team in a healthcare setting. They are in charge of the surgical procedures and operations done on the human body. Like doctors, they strive to treat the illnesses and ailments of others. Surgeons lead an extremely stressful occupation with irregular hours. They may specialize in a particular type of surgery, such as a neurosurgeon. They work with surgical technologists and circulating technologists.

Salary

The salary for surgeons is variable. It is dependent by location, specialization, and years of practice. All surgeons have lucrative careers, though the extraneous amount of student loans accrued during medical school may bog this down for several years.

Training and Qualifications

Surgeons start their education by completing an undergraduate degree in a life science or healthcare focus. During this initial 4 years of college, the aspiring doctor prepares for the Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT, which determines their eligibility for medical or surgeon school for the next four years.

In medical school, doctors may pursue a specialty—like the ones listed above, or from the dozens of others—or they may pursue education as a general practitioner. Once the doctor has completed four more years of education, they begin their residency in a hospital. This residency will take an additional 3 to 8 years depending on their specialization.

After finishing their residency, a doctor may apply for the applicable licensures to practice.

Job Outlook

The job outlook for physicians and surgeons vary, but all surgeons are expected to see tremendous growth in the 2008-2018 decade as the healthcare industry continues to expand. This is largely attributed to an increasing population, particularly a spike in the aging portion of our population.

Advancement

Doctors typically advance through years of experience. With the thorough amount of education involved in pursuing a career as a physician or surgeon, advancement educationally is minimal; many doctors, in fact, are required to pursuing continuing education each year just to maintain their current licensure. The most common form of advancement is a doctor that moves from a practice in a hospital or other healthcare facility to a private practice.
